systems engineer
jan/2003 - present

one of a senior team of four responsible for maintainance and development of a 1000+ node network (90% linux, the rest are mac/windows/SGI/proprietary systems).
several technologies have been taken all the way from idea through development, testing and implementation before training the rest of the systems team in ongoing maintenance (examples include distribution upgrades, real-time host database, distributed project storage and clustered filesystems).
i gained significant experience whilst rebuilding the entire IMAP/postfix mail system including anti-spam, anti-virus and security measures.

with nightly network traffic regularly up to (and often over) seven terrabytes, network and nfs tuning are of utmost importance.
clustered filesystem experience comes mainly from lustre but gfs and terragrid have also been used.
linux knowledge is primarily (but not exclusively) redhat.
a lot of our time is taken ensuring proper communication with production staff, keeping them informed and aware of changes and interruptions to service as well as improvements made.
